Everyone is beautiful on Facebook

An interesting aspect of websites like Facebook is that we all post pictures of ourselves. We want our Facebook friends to know what we are up to. We post pictures of special events that happen in our lives, parties, birthdays, social gatherings, our children, family and trips we take. Both men and women, when posting a picture of themselves, know they will receive comments. And a new phenomenon was created with social media: everyone is now beautiful. Look at your friends’ pictures and read the comments: “gorgeous”, “beautiful”, “hot”, “stunning” are often used to describe them. Many times the person is just…average.

Men are also receiving comments on their appearance, something that is usually reserved for women-although men still refuse to compliment another man’s appearance.

I think people feel obliged to say something nice when someone posts a picture of themselves, which is almost an intimate thing to do. We are all exposing ourselves. Can you imagine if people said what they really think of your picture sometimes? “You need to lose at least 10 lbs.”, “Having a bad hair day?”, “You are not aging well, are you?”, “Your friend is so much prettier than you”, “I think you could do better than her” or worse: “My God you are ugly”!

So fake or not, millions of women on Facebook and other social media sites are being called beautiful, hot and gorgeous (and some men too, by women). I think everyone’s collective ego is high in the internet age!
